Frequently Asked Questions
Is pancreatitis strictly an alcoholic’s disease?
No. Gallstones commonly trigger acute episodes, while genetics, structural abnormalities, medications and other factors can affect adults, infants and children without alcohol exposure.
Can someone with pancreatitis return to moderate drinking?
No. Beer, wine and spirits may worsen pancreatic damage or trigger another episode. Complete avoidance is generally recommended, particularly for alcohol-related pancreatic disease.
Does the disappearance of severe abdominal pain mean complete recovery?
No. Chronic damage may continue despite symptom improvement, causing enzyme deficiency, poor nutrient absorption and weight loss. Regular medical follow-up remains important.
Can highly spicy food cause pancreatitis?
No. Spices do not directly damage pancreatic tissue. However, extremely fatty dietary patterns can contribute indirectly by raising triglyceride levels, a recognised risk factor.
Does pancreatitis affect only older adults?
No. It can develop at any age, including infancy. Genetics, abdominal injury, infections, medications and congenital pancreatic abnormalities may contribute in younger individuals.
